Healthy Eating Trends!

Dear FCC Families,

I am very looking forward to meeting you again this coming Saturday, May 14th for our 2nd cooking event! We are going to explore some food items made from various rices and grains, including Pearl Meat Balls, Fried Rice Noodles, Sesame Balls and Almond-flavored Rice Milk.

There is a book by Grace Young, The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen, has mentioned about rice in Chinese culture. Let me quote, " Rice's importance to Chinese culture is reflected in the language. The Cantonese, for example, have two words for rice: Mai, which is the raw rice, and fan, the cooked grain. Fan also just means "food," as in the common, everyday greeting, "Nay sik zaw fan may?" The literal translation is " Have you had your rice yet?," but fan in this sentence symbolizes all food." unquote. The book also mentioned some interesting phrases that use rice to indicate wealth, good marriage, secure job.....etc. So definitely need to have some rice in your home!

Have you heard of The Healthy Eating Pyramid published by Dept. of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health? Here is the link. Basically, it advises us to have good foundation of exercises & weight control strategies, eat more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats/oils from plants, then have plenty seeds/nuts/legumes, fish.chicken, eggs as protein sources, but consume less dairy products, and rarely red meat, refined grains, sugary drinks/sweets and salts.

Eating more fruits and vegetables is a good habit to have and should build this habits earlier. I often regret I did not offer my kids the right foods while they are young! However, I have found ways to give them PLENTY via the whole foods smoothies I have invented! Good tastes and pretty colors are just not easy to refuse!

Visit my newly updated website, www.sunnychinesekitchen.com for more information about Healthy Eating Habits and my newly launched HANDS-Healthy and Natural Dining Services!
Welcome to SUNNY's Spot!

Dear FCC families and supporters,

It's my privilege to host this blog and share what SUNNY Chinese Kitchen and my private Chinese Kingka Academy have been offering and doing these days in local communities.

For most FCC families, I believe you can relate to the challenges in term of keeping the unique link with your children's heritage-China. This is where I might be able to offer some helps. I will post some short articles about Chinese language, customs, Chinese cooking, traditions & philosophies at this blog site.

A little bit more about me. I consider my life experience is pretty unique as I was raised in Taiwan by parents who were originally from Mainland China. Even people all speak Mandarin Chinese as official language both in China and Taiwan; however, the political status between them is still very sensitive. I then came to the US in 1991 for my graduate study in Biological Sciences, married to my ex who is from Mainland China in 1994, got the US citizenship in 2003, and have been raising my two sons in the United States exclusively.

There are challenges associated with raising my sons as second generation Chinese Americans and working here as a foreign-born professional. I also learn that one of my sons has a terminal disease and will use power wheelchair for his daily routine. However, I have realized that I have so much to offer to others because of these challenges and unique experience. Operating SUNNY Chinese Kitchen and Chinese Kingka Academy does serve the purpose to share my knowledge and experience in a fun and "delicious" way!

I admire your commitment and efforts to keep learning things about China. I look forward to meeting you in the future cooking events and corresponding the comments and questions you might have at SUNNY's Spot!
